The timing was perfect. Ryan was in need of a grand catharsis to start the next chapter of his life. He was recently divorced and had one of those college jobs that wouldn't miss him for two weeks. I had been working as an Environmental Geologist for the past 3 years and although the job was satisfying, it was no longer rewarding. Being between jobs, I was a little anxious because I had not completely sewn up my next job, but decided to press on with the adventure anyway.
Our objective was to reach the highest points of as many states practical East of the Mississippi River. We didn't get to each state, but tackled the bulk of the high points including the Highest Point east of the Mississippi River. Somehow the pace of the trip seemed unhurried. We covered 5,000 miles within two weeks mostly on back roads stopping at diners and road side stands for food. We did some rock hounding along the way, hiking and exploring.
