A 5000-mile road trip through some of the
highest points of the Eastern United States, July 12-24, 1998
FLORIDA The day finally came, July 12th, a new chapter beings. My then-girlfriend, now-wife, Jennifer, and I had just moved to our current residence in Gainesville, Florida. Jennifer and I said our good-byes around 8am and I was off to Tallahassee to pick up Ryan. He was living alone in an apartment in downtown Tallahassee, close to Florida State. Ryan was in grad school for Anthropology, only a year into the program. We were both really 'amped' to get rollin', so we loaded up and hit the highway, bound for our state's highest point, Lakewood Park. It is in the Panhandle, northwest of De Funiak Springs, near the Georgia border. The 'summit' was very uneventful, as with typical Florida, tree's everywhere, but at least it was at a top of a hill, so there was a minor view on the way back (much better views are found at Torreya State Park on the Appalachicola River.
