A 5000-mile road trip through some of the
highest points of the Eastern United States, July 12-24, 1998
ALABAMA & MISSISSIPPI
Not much time is ever spent in Alabama on I-10, it is only about a 1-hour trip from Florida to Miss., we didn't even stop!
In Mississippi, we headed north to Jackson, where I heard you could collect petrified wood in the rivers there. This seems practical as there is a Petrified Forest just northwest of Jackson. Even though it was raining, we pulled of and did a quick check. There were snakes, but no obvious petrified wood for us to collect, so we pressed on.
We made it to Vicksburg just before sun down and went into a floating casino. The best thing about casinos is the free drinks. Ryan and I cashed in some bucks for tokens and went to hit the slots and the Blackjack tables. We enjoyed our free drinks and even got some free sandwiches...the best part is I came out ahead, $25 richer than I went in! So with full bellies & bladders, and extra cash, we hammered down towards Hot Springs, Arkansas.
